Quays

Boat Quay on the Singapore River

The Singapore River has three quays – landings where boats can load and unload goods – that were central to Singapore commerce in the 19th and early 20th centuries. In the early days of modern Singapore, Boat Quay (above) was the central hub for merchants to receive goods, while Clarke Quay and Robertson Quay housed warehouse space to store goods.

Nowadays, the three quays all host pedestrian malls that contribute to the night life of Singapore. Clarke Quay (above) is a popular place to have drinks with friends or bring a date and sit by the river. Robertson Quay has many upscale restaurants and is the quietest of the three quays. Boat quay is the most diverse, with many restaurants, as well as numerous historic buildings and museums surrounding it. Here are a few more photos from Boat Quay:

Most visitors to Singapore spend some of their time along the river on at least one of these quays. I obviously prefer the cultural elements of Boat Quay, but party lovers will probably enjoy Clarke Quay the most, while lovers of fine dining will favor Robertson Quay.
